For over 150 years Assumption University, under the administration of the Basilian Fathers, has provided a range of educational opportunities to the people of the Windsor and Essex County region. Assumption began as a College in the classical French style, became a comprehensive Provincial University, and since 1963 has remained an independent University federated with its daughter university, the University of Windsor.

Since the inception of the University of Windsor, Assumption University has focused its role on the relationship between religion and culture. This focus is expressed through: The Christian Culture Series (a distinguished speakers series) and its Faith and Culture Gold Medal; a Department of Graduate Ecumenical Theology; and The Centre for the Study of Religion and Culture with opportunities for research Chairs. Assumption University also operates the Freed-Orman Conference Centre serving both the academic and the larger city community as a meeting and events space.

Coming Events

Assumption University to hold seminar on Human Trafficking sponsored by The Law Foundation of Ontario.

The Law Foundation of Ontario has awarded a grant to Assumption University in sponsorship of a two day seminar - evening of November 4, 2010 (8:00 p.m.) for the community and the morning of November 5, 2010 (9:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon) for 350 students from local high schools, from St. Clair College and from The University of Windsor.

The program will deal with the issue of Human Trafficking as a form of Family Violence (in part), as when Third World Children are sold into slavery or indentured servitude by their parents or when unsuspecting teenagers and younger children are traded into prostitution. It is estimated that one million people, mostly women and children are trafficked around the world each year for sex, for sweat shops and for au pair servitude.

Participants confirmed are: four (4) presenters involved in human trafficking counter measures including: MP Joy Smith of Winnipeg who has introduced a private members bill calling for a minimum five (5) year prison term for anyone convicted of trafficking in Canada; Rosalind Prober (Winnipeg) founder of Beyond Borders; Shelly Gilbert who is active in Windsor based human trafficking counter measures as well as Mark Erick Hecht (Ottawa) who is a children’s rights lawyer.

There will be four (4) victims (survivors) of Human Trafficking in Canada as part of a panel discussion.
