The Catholic Church stands as the world’s largest religious institution, but it is also a formidable political entity that exerts considerable influence on the international stage. This course will begin by examining the Church’s hierarchical structure, curial departments, and diplomatic corps and relations. The course will then move to discuss the Church’s role in political affairs, including rallying against oppressive regimes, condemning conflicts, brokering peace deals, and campaigning for human rights. Finally, the course will explore the Church’s role in striving for better international order free from poverty, climate change, and nuclear proliferation.
